Godfrey Matangira grew up under the care of his grandmother, whose family ties to the legendary sculptor Nicholas Mukomberanwa had a profound influence on his life. With both Nicholas and another accomplished uncle, Albert Mamvura, as mentors, Godfrey was introduced early to the world of stone carving, immersing himself in the techniques and traditions of Zimbabwean sculpture.
After his mother’s passing, Godfrey was raised in an environment rich in artistic heritage. His upbringing in the Mukomberanwa family provided invaluable exposure to the discipline of sculpture. Spending time at Nicholas Mukomberanwa’s renowned studio in Ruwa, Godfrey honed his skills alongside other talented artists, learning not only creative techniques but also how to use specialized hand tools essential for working with Zimbabwe's famously hard stones.
In 1998, Godfrey formally joined Nicholas Mukomberanwa’s studio, embarking on his professional journey as an artist. The passing of Nicholas in 2002 marked a turning point, prompting Godfrey to continue his artistic evolution alongside his cousin, Nesbert Mukomberanwa. After years of growth and collaboration, Godfrey pursued his independent career in 2006.
Artistic Style and Influence
Godfrey Matangira has developed a distinctive style that sets his work apart, particularly through his expressive busts of women with elaborate, flowing hairstyles. His sculptures embody a perfect blend of elegance and creativity, reflecting both the beauty and individuality of his subjects.
His connection to the Mukomberanwa legacy is evident in the craftsmanship and precision of his work, yet Godfrey has cultivated a unique artistic voice that resonates within contemporary Zimbabwean art.
