Preston Sampson 84”an internationally renowned artist and distinguished alumnus of the University of Maryland is a colorist whose use of mediums include canvas, pulp painting, encaustics and printmaking. His work has found expression with audiences domestically as well as abroad, in public, private, corporate and institutional collections and exhibitions.
His work can be seen in the collections at Yale University, University of Colorado, The David Driskell Center at University of Maryland, University of Alabama, University of Colorado, DreamWorks, the Dallas Museum, the Georgia State
Museum, the Spirit Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, and the Museo Della Carta della Filigrana in Fabriano Italy. Locally his work can be seen at the Washington Convention Center, in the D C Mayor’s office, at the National Education Association headquarters and the University of Maryland.
Among his most recent public commissions include Monarchs, a large scale work for the Ron Brown College Preparatory School in Washington, DC, True Grit, a large work installed at the Xfinity Center at the University of Maryland, commemorating hall of fame basketball coach Gary Williams; Tales Retold, a bust of President Obama which was included in the Visions of our 44th President exhibit at the Charles Wright Museum in Detroit: River Bandits, a painting installed in Davenport, Iowa at the Modern Woodman Baseball Park, home of the single A minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros and recognized as one of the finest minor league ballparks in the nation. Sampson’s portrait of President Obama titled see-saw was also featured in Politico Magazine in January 2016.
